What Is Mediation/Conflict Resolution?

Conflict occurs whenever two or more parties believe they have incompatible goals and limited resources. Conflict is inevitable, but is destructive only when the parties cannot resolve their differences.

Various processes can be used by people to settle disputes, from informal discussion and problem solving, to violent interaction.

Mediation is the process by which a neutral third party intervenes between two conflicting parties to promote reconciliation, settlement, or compromise. Mediation is an effective tool for resolution of almost all civil (non-criminal) disputes.

Mediation has been successfully used in cases involving:

  • Divorce settlements
  • Child custody and support
  • Spousal Support/Alimony agreements
  • Contractual disputes
  • Landlord and tenant conflicts
  • Employment disputes
  • Special Education
  • Community Issues
